Substance abuse and addictions
Everyone has a different risk of experiencing substance abuse and gambling addiction. The risk factors for and protective factors against the development of addiction can be influenced by experiences throughout a person’s life. Protective factors include, for example, well-developed social skills and networking, healthy self-esteem and a sense of self-worth, a supportive and safe community, and non-smoking and sobriety or limited intake of potentially addictive substances. Even if there are risk factors in childhood, youth or adulthood, acquiring and strengthening protective factors can also be influenced by one's own actions.
