Food and exercise

Good food, happier mind - really!
A balanced and regular diet helps you cope and increases well-being.
Healthy food is tasty, varied, colorful and contains a lot of vitamins and minerals: preparing and enjoying food with family or friends can be a companionship at its best. You are also allowed to set the table just for yourself!

Home cooking is a way to live life your way and a great way to keep your finances under control. Home cooking can also be environmentally friendly. Basic foods are generally inexpensive, and on-line you can find tips to spice up even the most familiar recipes. You can find a lot of information about nutrition on the Marttakoulu’s page. Martta’s site also has a variety of recipes.

Strict rules in dieting or monitoring and banning individual nutrients often doesn’t work for longer periods of time.  Focus on eating a healthy balanced diet, and remember that also sweets or treats are sometimes allowed. Eating healthily and regularly supports wellbeing, you can learn to understand your body better and notice what it is saying to you. Could the anger or a brain-freeze in the afternoon be due to hunger? To get up and running in the morning, your body needs both energy and a kick-start: lazy mornings are nice but may come with a cost. In order for a good start in the morning we require not only energy, but also movement to get the blood flowing and delivering said energy to its destination. If you don’t have an appetite in the morning, perhaps take a snack with you to work or study. Many of us nap in the afternoon mainly because the interval between meals has been too long and the body gets tired of a sudden large amount of food. There are many options for a healthy diet, as long as you ensure you eat a good variety and maintain a regular food rhythm. If eating produces anxiety, it’s a good idea to talk about it with someone.

Everyone has the right to enjoy exercise.
Exercising in a way that pleases you can bring a great deal of joy and pleasure to life. By exercising, you can take care not only of your body, but also of your mind. Exercise that is appropriately challenging produces positive experiences and supports and promotes mental, social and physical well-being. Exercise increases the production of pleasure hormones and the body's resistance to many pathogens, it can help manage stress, improve sleep quality and make it easier to fall asleep. In challenging life situations, exercise helps reduce anxiety and tension. Exercise can be a source of both activity and relaxation and can be an opportunity to spend time together with family and friends. In order to get the most out of your training experience, it is essential that you find the right form of exercise for you.

Just a few exercises a week improves general fitness, improves muscle strength, balance and coordination. There are also sports that you may not consider an exercise, even though they are good at maintaining fitness. For example, nice ways to take care of yourself and your well-being may include bowling, dancing, exercise such as walking and climbing stairs during the day, and moving around in nature. Exercise or brief immobility should not cause anxiety or compulsion. Exercise should not harm a healthy person, and to counterbalance exercise, the body and mind needs recovery. Improper exercise increases the risk of accidents and injuries. The risk increases if one does not take into account one's state of health or basic condition or falls into too much physical exertion.
